Spike Lee’s best narrative feature since “Inside Man” chronicles the high-stakes gamble of African American detective Ron Stallsworth (an extraordinary John David Washington), who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan by pretending to be a racist bigot over the phone (his colleague, played by a smarmy Adam Driver, showed up at rallies to complete the illusion). It’s filmmaking of the highest order from an American master finally receiving the appreciation he deserves. The movie’s taut, suspenseful narrative remains in the confines of its protagonist’s perspective as his grip on reality slowly comes unraveled, leading to a shocking finale that forces its audience to grapple with its potent themes from the inside out.

Paul Schrader’s best movie in years stars Ethan Hawke (in one of his finest roles) as an upstate New York priest who faces a crisis of faith as he attempts to help out a pregnant woman and learns of an ecological conspiracy behind his church’s main benefactor. It’s a very different kind of modern love story.

But things start to look up for the couple when they agree to take in their stray 25-year-old niece, Sadie (phenomenal newcomer Kayli Carter), who might be willing to help them out in their endless journey to start a family. And so begins a modern domestic rollercoaster, full of tempered highs, devastating lows, and a tenacity that blurs into the quixotic. Their story is sad and funny in equal measure, with all of the laughs are delicately layered atop a bedrock of scar tissue and disappointment. Over time, as one cycle bleeds into another, “Private Life” grows into less of an epic about the agonies of reproduction than one about the rewards of resilience. Want to gripe about our choices or suggest others? Drop us a line at “Private Life”Ī hilarious, bougie, and crushingly honest story about a desperate couple trying something - anything - to have a baby before it’s too late, Tamara Jenkins’ first film since “The Savages” has been gestating for nine years, and it’s more than worth the wait. “Private Life” stars Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn as Richard and Rachel Grimes, a pair of Lower East Side literary types who’ve been running themselves ragged on “the fertility treadmill” for quite a while – maybe too long. You’ll never see a superhero movie on here, but a singular vision with some studio backing is fair game. Additionally, we reserve the right to include some films that were produced at studios if they encapsulate an independent sensibility. Note: While some films on this list were released by studios, they were initially developed as independent projects. Of course, a great movie is a great movie, and some of these rankings are unlikely to change as the year goes on.
Likewise, the list positions some stellar new releases higher on the list as a means of advocating for them as they become available. Movies that qualified for awards purposes last year but received proper releases in 2018 have been included, but are positioned lower on the list in order to spotlight newer films in the conversation. Some rankings have taken into account timing.
